MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Riley County Police Department showcased a day in the life of one of their police officers in a unique way Friday as they continue to find new ways to connect to the public, particularly through social media.

Officer Matt Droge is the Public Information Officer for the RCPD but he’s also known by many as the "TwitterCop" for his constant interactions with the department’s thousands of followers.

But on Friday, he had some help. Kansas State University junior Megan Thurlow was selected for a "Tweet Along," taking over RCPD's twitter account as she accompanied Droge on a patrol shift.

"I’m tweeting every clever thing that comes to my mind... I'm looking forward to catching some bad guys, definitely," Thurlow told 13 News.

The RCPD has participated in several of these "Tweet Along" events over the past several months and has received positive feedback from the community.

"The goal is to get someone else’s opinion or perspective of the average day as a law enforcement officer. We’ve always tweeted and our twitter account is always done by police officers and we thought that it would be interesting to give the community another look at what we do from someone else’s eyes," Officer Droge said.

Megan has followed the RCPD closely on Twitter and was excited to be chosen to get an inside look at what officers do each day and share her experience with other followers.

"They’re great on the social media," Thurlow said of the agency's online efforts. "They really reach out to the community. They’re up-to-date and constantly networking and marketing. They make cops look friendly."

"We are using social media to connect to the public and it is a goal of the Riley County Police Department to be transparent and friendly to the community. Community members have questions and comments and they can reach us on social media and I think that’s a good avenue for it," Droge added.

And their social media push has paid off for the RCPD. Besides connecting with those they serve, officers have used it to solve several crimes.
