Riley County Press Release
RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) - In the early morning hours of October 27, 2013, the Riley County Police Department while conducting investigations into ongoing property crime in the Manhattan and Riley County area obtained information which has led to several arrests. With the combined efforts of the Crime Intelligence Unit, Patrol, and the RCPD Investigations Division two men were arrested and confined on $6,000.00 bond each.
At approximately 4:30 AM Cole Smykle, 21, of Fort Riley, Kansas and Raymond Burrus, 20, of Junction City, Kansas were arrested while in the 700 block of Osage in Manhattan. Both subjects were arrested for burglary and interference with law enforcement and then confined at the Riley County Jail. At the time of this release only Burrus was still confined. These arrests were a result of the diligent work of officers and detectives as well as the Crime Intelligence Unit’s ability to forecast crime through statistical data.
This form of evidence based policing (Initiative: Laser Point) was the subject of a Riley County Police Department and Kansas State University Sociology Department collaboration which got them international recognition and an Excellence in Law Enforcement Research: Bronze Award earlier this month at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As a result of these arrests over 11 other vehicle burglary investigations were tied to these men and a good portion of past stolen goods were recovered.
Riley County Police would like to remind the public to secure doors and windows to vehicles and residences as well as report suspicious activity to police in a timely manner. Those members of the public with information on crimes in our area are encouraged to contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers.
