Prosecutor Says Deputy Justified In Shooting Man

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ A northeast Kansas sheriff's deputy won't
face disciplinary action for last month's fatal shooting of a
46-year-old man.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe issued a statement
Tuesday saying the officer's use of force against Matthew L. White
was justified under Kansas law.

A deputy approached White's vehicle Oct. 13 after seeing it
facing the wrong direction on a street in Olathe (oh-LAY'-thuh).
The man fled, but a different deputy caught up with him and White
was shot and died at the scene.

Authorities didn't say what prompted the shooting.

White was paroled last year from a Kansas prison after serving
time for a November 2004 knife assault on a corrections officer in
Johnson County. He also had a 2001 conviction for aggravated
battery involving great bodily harm.
