TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Washburn University law student and her colleagues donated proceeds from an annual ball to two local organizations Monday afternoon.

Chandler Maxon, chair of the Barrister's Ball and Charity Auction, presented $2,500.55 each to the Topeka Literacy Council and Kids Voting Kansas.

The Topeka Literacy Council was in attendance to claim their donation.

Washburn University School of Law holds the Barrister's Ball and Charity Auction every year, and asks professors, staff, and local merchants to donate items to raise money for a specific charity.

Silent auction bidding begins the week before the event, continuing through the Barrister's Ball dinner.

The Topeka Literacy Council helps adults learn to read and write to help their economic advancement and self-esteem.

Kids Voting Kansas works to Kansas's elementary and secondary students involved in the voting process to increase voter participation
