TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An update on a proposed bond issue for Topeka Public Schools Thursday night revealed a higher price tag and a recommendation to close a third elementary school.

The USD 501 board of education heard the update during its meeting.

District spokesperson Ron Harbaugh told 13 News the revised plan has a price tag of $142 million, rather than the $90 million previously discussed.

He said it also calls for closing Bishop Elementary School and turning the building into a district-wide professional development center.

The plan already included closing Avondale West and Shaner. Students from all three schools would combine in a new elementary school to be built next to and connected to Jardine Middle School, giving the district its third K-8 campus.

Even with the higher price tag, Harbaugh says the mil levy would not increase from what patrons currently pay. Voters would need to approve the bond issue. It also includes improvements in security and technology and a proposal to close the current Capital City School building.
