Police Warn Citizens About Automated Debit Card Calls

The Topeka Police Department has recently been made aware that Citizens have been receiving an automated phone call telling them that their debit card has been de-activated and the citizen is to push one (1) to re-activate. If the citizen does press (1), it will prompt them to enter their card number.

Financial institutions have confirmed to police that this is not a procedure that is legitimately used. These calls do not specify the financial institution, it just refers to “your debit card.”

At this time, all calls have been received on cell phones. Police urge citizens to use caution if they receive one of these calls, and to not give banking information to unidentified sources.
