TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka Police say a person who arrived at a hospital Friday afternoon with a gunshot wound has died. Whether that victim was injured during an exchange of gunfire between people in two vehicles in East Topeka remains under investigation.
Police say 19-year-old Guillermo Galicia was dropped off at the St. Francis ER around 11 am Friday. They say the person who brought him immediately got into the gray Jeep Cherokee in which they arrived and sped away.
Around that same time, officers were putting up crime tape and marking numerous shell casings around the area of SE 4th and Lake and Chandler.
Police say people in two vehicles were shooting at each other. One of the vehicles hit a garage, went through two chain link fences, then stopped when it ran into a house.
Police say the people in the vehicle ran before officers arrived. The second vehicle left the scene.
Capt. Jerry Stanley says officers were investigating how all the evidence was connected and searching for the people involved.
"We have a car filled with bullet holes but haven't been able to locate the persons in the vehicle," Stanley said. "We are feverishly trying to track that down and see what we need to know so we can continue the investigation and see how we proceed with that."
Police are investigating the victim's death as a homicide. They are seeking the public's assistance in finding the driver and vehicle. Lt. Ron Gish says detectives are investigating whether Galicia's injury happened in the exchange of gunfire between the vehicles, but cannot confirm that at this time.
