Pigeons Take Flight For Race Across Midwest

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - More than 3,300 pigeons took to the sky for a race across the Midwest.

Thousands of homing pigeons were released at 6:15 Saturday morning as part of the 64th annual Midwest National Classic Old Bird Race.

Competitors brought their birds from as far as Colorado and Wisconsin, only to have the pigeons make the trip back home again.

The birds are equipped with technology that measures the yards per minute they fly.

Homing pigeon racers say the competition is especially in fierce in this weather.

Organizers say they want to encourage young people to get involved in this age-old sport.
