MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A fire that tore through a Manhattan home nearly three months ago is now being classified as an arson by authorities.

The residential house fire that occurred on Sunday, July 1, 2012, located at 531 Bertrand Street, caused $90,000 worth of damage to the structure and contents. The cause was originally listed as undetermined.

The owner of the residence, Cadell Bynum, 43, was not at home at the time of the fire.

Ryan Almes, Manhattan Fire Department’s Deputy Chief, says investigators have since come across new information that indicates that the blaze was an incendiary fire.

“The result of witness interviews has allowed investigators to determine the fire was intentionally set,” a press release from the Manhattan Fire Department said Tuesday, September 25, 2012.

“We do not have any information as to how the fire was started but there is a person of interest in the case,” Almes told WIBW.

Riley County Police Department Investigators, in cooperation with Fire investigators from the Manhattan Fire Department, are currently working on the investigation.
