TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Hayden High School student was talking on his cell phone when he was hit by a car late Wednesday afternoon, a witness told the Topeka Police Department. The 15 year-old reportedly pushed the crosswalk button, but did not wait for the signal to change before crossing.
He was crossing right in front of Via's Pizzeria near 8th Street and Gage Blvd. shortly after 3:30 p.m. The teen tried crossing about 10-15 feet outside of the crosswalk.
Police said he may have suffered a head injury.
The driver of the Mercedes said she tried to stop but couldn't. Three kids were in the car with her. No one in the car were hurt.
The incident shut down both northbound lanes of Gage Blvd. and one southbound lane for much of the afternoon.
