TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Republican state Representative Joe Patton says he's calling on television stations to pull a political ad from the air. The ad, paid for by incumbent, Republican state Senator Vicki Schmidt, calls Patton a Democrat trial lawyer.

Patton says he was a Democrat, but he says he switched to the Republican party when the Democrats became too radical.

"My opponent obviously has $200 thousand and is able to broadcast these falsehoods hoping that she will convince undecideds to move her direction. I think that's a mistake. I think folks will see through that, look at the voting record and make their decision," Patton said Monday (8/6).

In response to Patton's new conference, Schmidt wrote 13 News: "The real issue here is, who is paying for Joe Patton’s campaign and what’s their motive? There’s been a tsunami of direct mail & radio ads funded by outside special interest groups. They are desperate to have their interests represented, not ours. A rough calculation shows over $200,000 has been spent by these outside groups attacking me personally and misleading the voters... As I’ve campaigned over the last several months, it is clear to me that voters want someone who is honest, fiscally conservative and who will listen to their concerns and not the special interests who spend big bucks to get them elected."
