TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Shawnee County couple is earning national honors for their support of a project at Lake Shawnee.
Shawnee Co. Parks and Rec Director John Knight informed commissioners Thursday that Dick and Dotty Hanger were named Outstanding Contributors for 2011 by the National Association of County Parks and Rec Officials. The Hangers created an endowment fund to raise $1 million for a nature preserve bearing their names.
Knight told commissioners that money from the Parks and Rec Foundation fund will be used to pay the Hangers expenses to travel to Pittsburgh to receive the award.
The national group also is honoring the "Play for All Park" at Gage Park as one of the year's outstanding projects.
