TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An advisory group remains hopeful of seeing a bridge to safely connect two local trails.
The Shawnee County Parks and Rec Advisory Board unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday night urging Shawnee County commissioners to approve the funding. The Kansas Turnpike Authority is asking the county to contribute a half-million dollars to add an 11-foot wide pedestrial walkway when it replaces the Wittenberg Road bridge over the turnpike.
The bridge would allow for safe connection of the Deer Creek and Lake Shawnee trails. Commissioners considered it sever weeks ago, however, Commissioner Shelly Buhler's motion to approve the funding died for lack of a second.
The advisory board also considered the process for gaining public input as it develops a master plan for its facilities. It will include public meetings in each commission district, focus groups and polling. The goal is to launch focus groups by August. A timeline for other activities is not yet set.
