EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Two Emporia State students received honors for their work with ostriches. Nakita Elwood and Teri Whitson took home a $4,000 grand prize in the first-ever 3D Emporia Business Venture competition.
"We entered it as a class project, so we figured we had nothing to lose," recalled Whitson. "So we did, and we ended up in the top 20, and then we ended up in the top 3, and then we won - so it was pretty exciting."
The Rock Creek Ostrich Farm looks to meet the demand for an alternative red meat. It is one of five such farms in Kansas.
The 3D Competition - which stands for Dream It, Design It, Develop It - highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of students from Emporia State and Flint Hills Technical College.
"The experience we got doing this was amazing. I cannot put a monetary value on the knowledge that we gained by having to do a business model and all that compared to what the money was," said Elwood.
The top three Emporia teams will now compete against teams from Kansas State University in the Kansas Entreprenuership Challenge in Manhattan on April 30th.
