TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Some Shawnee County residents will be able to receive scaled down versions of new curbside recycling containers after the new year.

Commissioners Monday agreed to swap out four remaining loads of 95 gallon containers for smaller 65 and 35 gallon bins.

The request was made by Public Works Director Tom Vlach, who relayed feedback from residents who think a smaller container will better suit their needs.

"They feel that two of the larger containers will have trouble fitting into their garage," Vlach said. "Some of them just don't feel they will produce the amount of recycling material that would warrant, or justify having a container that size."

Vlach said ordering some smaller containers will help provide the best customer service possible.

65 and 35 gallon containers will not be available until after the new year. They will be made available upon request.

The county's new curbside recycling program is scheduled to begin in January. County issued recycling containers are already being delivered to homes.
