Officers Arrest Robbery Suspect After Standoff

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__ Officers arrested a man who they say robbed a convenience store and initiated a long standoff with law enforcement.

According to a press release, officers were called to the report of an armed robbery at Casey's General Store in Silver Lake around 9:30pm Wednesday.

The clerk at the store told officers the suspect who has been identified as 46-year-old Robert Ray Baker of Silver Lake, was a regular at the store.

A police officer who had just started his shift was in the vicinity of Baker's residence (303 Theresa st.) when he noticed him standing in the front yard. Baker pointed a handgun at the officer and ran inside his house, initiating a standoff with officers.

Shawnee County Sheriffs Office and S.W.A.T tried to get Baker to surrender. At 7:19am Thursday, Robert Baker was taken into custody and taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure before being booked into the into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.
