TOPEKA, Kan. (KAKE) -- The winner of the $1 million prize in this year’s Holiday Millionaire Raffle is Nancy Hubble of Norwich. The 57-year-old winner claimed the ticket Wednesday afternoon at Lottery headquarters.
“When I went to the Lottery website that night to check our tickets, the first thing I saw was a photo of the winning number announcement and the lady holding a case that had a number in it that looked very familiar,” Hubble said.
Hubble’s happy story is also bittersweet. The time when she checked her tickets on the Lottery’s website, a little after midnight on New Year’s Eve, was almost the exact time her 19-year-old daughter Casey was killed in a car accident on New Year’s Eve 12 years ago.
“Right away Todd said, ‘Casey did this, I know she did,’” Hubble said with tears in her eyes. “And when I called my son Skylar that night to tell him I’d won, he told me he was sitting outside thinking about Casey at the moment I called.”
The emotional winner said they were still pondering what to do with the money.
“This is really a blessing to us,” said Hubble. “I think we’re going to invest in some things, and because we love to hunt and fish, we may also take a fishing trip to Florida.”
Coincidentally when Hubble was at Lottery headquarters, Governor Sam Brownback was also there to attend a meeting and posed for a picture with the $1 million winner. It was also the first “big winner photo” for the Kansas Lottery’s new Executive Director, Terry Presta, who started in his position this week.
The store that sold the $1 million Holiday Millionaire Raffle ticket is Casey’s General Store 2308, located at 442 East D Avenue in Kingman. For selling the ticket, the store becomes eligible for a $1,000 bonus.
