TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Cigarette litter is the most common litter item to be found in clean-ups across the country and cigarette companies have acknowledged this problem.

The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program created by the non profit group Keep America Beautiful came up with a solution with the "Don't be a Nut, Dispose of Your Butt" campaign.

Volunteers distributed free pocket ashtrays and so called "butt buckets" for smokers at Gage Park Sunday.

The Board of Directors say it takes nearly 17 years for one cigarette butt to break down in the environment.
