MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A dozen new firefighters in Manhattan are starting their careers in the fire service.

At a graduation ceremony Friday afternoon, twelve new firefighters were sworn in at the Manhattan Fire Department’s headquarters on Denison Avenue. They also received their badges and helmets.

The recruits endured a rigorous six week training process both in the classroom and training field, learning the skills needed to fight fires and save lives.

“It’s very exciting. It’s an exciting day. We put a lot of hard work into this but really it’s just the start of a career and this is all something we feel we’re called to do and again, we’re all very excited,” said Tyler Budke, one of the new firefighters.

The new firefighters will be assigned to stations throughout the city, including two new stations on the west side of Manhattan where the Fire Department is expanding its coverage. One of the stations is replacing an existing station and the other is a brand new facility.
