TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Some Topekans will live in new city council districts.
The Council voted Tuesday night to approve the "Plan B" map recommended by its redistricting committee. The vote was 7-2, with Sylvia Ortiz and Chad Manspeaker casting the dissenting votes.
Earlier, council members rejected by a five-four vote a map requested by Councilman John Alcala, that kept all of Oakland in District 2. However, opponents disagreed with how the change impacted other districts.
Alcala, Ortiz, Manspeaker and Karen Hiller voted for that alternative.
Oakland neighborhood residents said they were disappointed they couldn't keep their neighborhood in a district together.
Council members are required to redraw districts to maintain equal population.
