The following is from the Kansas Adjutant General's Office:

Members of the Kansas National Guard Honor Guard will participate in the sixth annual Wreaths Across America Day to honor veterans at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery and Leavenworth National Cemetery during the holiday season, Dec, 10, 2011.

Both ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. The Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery is located at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, Kan., and the Leavenworth National Cemetery is located at 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kan.

The Kansas National Guard Honor Guard will support the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery ceremony with one soldier to play live “Taps” and the Leavenworth National Cemetery ceremony with a firing party of three soldiers.

Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all servicemembers and POW/MIA who served and to honor their sacrifices. This ceremony will be simultaneously conducted at more than 600 participating locations across the nation in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of wreaths from Maine being donated and placed on headstones at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

It is projected that more than 400,000 wreaths will be placed nationwide this year by more than 150,000 volunteers as part of the Wreaths Across America mission to remember and honor veterans.

The Wreaths Across America's mission is to remember, honor and teach.

WAA pursues its mission with nationwide wreath-laying events during the holiday season and year-round educational outreach inviting all Americans to appreciate our freedoms and the cost at which they are delivered.
