Motorola Selected As Shawnee County's Emergency Radio System

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County is in line for a new, multi-million dollar emergency radio system.

At a special meeting Monday afternoon, commissioners unanimously chose Motorola's system at a cost of just over $12 million.

The digital system replaces the current 15-year-old analog system used by law enforcement, firefighters and emergency responders.

The system would allow encryption, blocking media and the public from hearing scanner traffic.

Police Chief Ron Miller says the sheriff would ultimately decide when the feature would be used.
