TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A national monument honoring some four-legged heroes.
America's first National Fire Dog Monument is making a 2000-mile cross country trek honoring fire fighters and law enforcement professionals and their arson dogs. The 450-pound sculpture started its voyage in Denver. It could be seen at the Statehouse in Topeka Friday before continuing its journey to Washington, D.C.
State Farm public affairs specialist Heather Paul says the sculpture has left people stunned.
"I think the detail in what the artist was really able to capture is that immediate connection between the handler, the owner and their K-9 partner," she said.
Each year, billions of dollars in property and hundreds of lives are lost as a result of arson-related fires. State Farm helps fund programs to train dogs to assist authorities in investigating the incidents.
