TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Legendary cabaret singer Marilyn Maye and other Topekans gathered at the Jayhawk Tower for a champagne brunch with the singer.
First she took pictures with sponsors of the event in the Jayhawk Tower Theatre, and then joined in the brunch, singing some of her popular tunes.
The brunch was held as a fundraiser to renovate the historic theater. Marilyn started her career out in Topeka and sang in the theater before.
Doug Jones is the President of Jayhawk Theatre of Kansas board and is heading up the fundraising efforts. "[Marilyn] still has roots in Kansas and we were thrilled that she was willing to have this event for us. This is the last historic theater left in Topeka and as the Capitol City we need to make this happen," he said.
The board needs to raise almost $9 million to renovate the entire theater.
