MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Two schools in Manhattan were placed on lockout Tuesday as Riley County police worked to track down a person believed to be involved in an assault involving a weapon in the area.

The department tweeted Tuesday morning that the precaution was taken at Susan B. Anthony Middle School on Browning Avenue and Frank Bergman Elementary School on Lombard Drive.

Officials responded to concerns on Twitter, saying the incident did not occur at either school but that lockout at both schools was initiated due to the investigation nearby in the 2500 block of Candlecrest Circle- the Brittnay Ridge Estates. The complex is located on the west side of Manhattan off of Candlewood Drive and backs up to Seth Child Road.

Around 12:20 p.m. RCPD announced on Twitter that the incident was resolved and "no longer poses a danger to the community." The school lockouts lasted less than an hour, officials said.

"At approximately 11:20 this morning, officers responded to a complaint of an aggravated assault which included a subject brandishing a firearm. Since it was in close proximity to two area schools, the district was notified and ultimately, the decision to lockout the schools was made," explained Officer Matt Droge, the Riley County Police Department's Public Information Officer.

"When officers arrived on scene, they began to attempt to locate the subject who was brandishing a firearm. When they couldn’t immediately locate that subject, that’s when the schools were notified. Shortly after the schools were placed on lockout, officers made contact with the subject they were attempting to locate and an investigation into the original complaint ensued. At this time, an arrest has not been made, however, the investigation is currently ongoing," Droge said.

No one was injured in the aggravated assault. RCPD did not release any other details as their investigation into the incident continues.

During a school lockout, normal activities resume within the confines of the building and only authorized personnel are permitted to enter the school.

During a lockdown, all school activities cease and staff/students seek safety in a locked room until notified by law enforcement.

Lockouts are typically initiated when there is a threat out in the community. Lockdowns are typically initiated when a threat is believed to be already inside the school.
