21-year-old Corey Nance was identified Monday as the victim of a Sunday night shooting. He was shot in the 600 block of SE Lawrence, just before midnight. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where he died later.
Topeka Police say this is the 3rd homicide in Topeka this year.
Nance was arrested in 2005 on drug charges, related to a shooting in the 800 block of North Kansas.
From Topeka Police:
On May 15, 2011 at approximately 11:45 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of SE Lawrence reference a shooting. On arrival, officers found a 21-year-old male, of Topeka, suffering from several gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response, with life threatening injuries, where he later passed away from his injuries.
When Nance was 14, he was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections on charges of aggravated battery and criminal damage, in connection with the shooting of another teenage male in Topeka in 2005. That teen suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Nance was set to be sentenced on June 2nd, in connection with drug-trafficking.
Topeka police say they will not tolerate any retaliation, following this shooting.
At a press conference Monday afternoon, Sgt. Steven Taylor says police have interviewed 10 to 12 witnesses. However, Taylor says family members, including the victim's father, are not cooperating with police.
Taylor also says police have possibly identified suspects and a motive. He also says there are numerous leads in the case.
