TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Topeka Police say a couple was carjacked by a man they were offering a ride to Wednesday evening.
Officers were dispatched to the area of the 1100 block of SE Gilmore to investigate a carjacking robbery. They discovered a man and his girlfriend were at the Walgreen's at 10th & Topeka Boulevard when they met the suspect, who offered to pay money for a ride to the 10th & Golden area. The couple told police they were driving toward that area anyway so they agreed to give the man a ride.
The victim dropped off his girlfriend and the suspect jumped in the front seat, police say. The suspect told the man to get out of the car - a white Chevy Cavalier - or he would hurt him. He told the victim he had a gun, but never showed one. The victim got out of the vehicle and the man took off.
After the victim called police, a description of the car was put out and officers found it in the area of 6th & Branner. When the officer tried to pull him over, the driver fled, leading a chase down several streets and even getting onto I-70.
The chase headed east on I-70. Police say the driver exited onto California, lost control, hit a median strip, became airborne, then came to a stop on the south curb of 13th Street at California.
The vehicle was wrecked, but the driver didn't give him. He ran from the accident, but was caught by officers in a backyard in the area.
The suspect was identified as Don A. Womack Jr., 37. He was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, criminal damage, felony obstruction, felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Womack was interviewed by detectives before being taken to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.
