WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- A Wichita man has was sentenced Thursday to nearly 23 years in prison for the shooting death of an 8-year-old girl.
Zachary Gaston, 25, pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon.
A Sedgwick County judge on Thursday handed down the maximum sentence for Gaston: 22 years and eight months.
The victim, 8-year-old Kimbra Moore, was hit in the head by a stray bullet while she slept in her south Wichita home near 31st Street South and Broadway in September of 2012.
Soon after, police arrested Gaston. Investigators said he was shooting at a car when a stray bullet hit Moore. Another bullet grazed a woman, but she recovered.
