WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE)--A man in his 40's and a horse are dead and a child has serious injuries after they were hit by two vehicles Friday night in north Wichita.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Friday near East 21st Street North and Piatt.

Police said the man, the 6-year-old child and the horse were crossing 21st Street when they were hit by an eastbound car. That car then left the scene. It wasn't immediately know if the two were walking or riding the horse.

Two witnesses ran out in the street to help the victims when another eastbound vehicle reportedly didn't see the group and hit them. That driver did stop.

Police said the man died at the scene, and the child was transported to the hospital in very serious condition. At last update, he was undergoing surgery. The horse was humanely euthanized.

The two witnesses, a man and a 17-year-old girl, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

No names have been released.

Police continue to search for the first car that fled the scene. It was described only as a silver-colored vehicle with front end damage. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

A police briefing is being held Saturday afternoon in Wichita.
