HERINGTON, Kan. - A man is dead following an early morning fire in north-central Kansas.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. Monday on Main Street in Herington's central business district. That's in Dickinson County.

A Herington police officer saw smoke from several blocks away and called it in. When he arrived, flames were already coming from the windows of a second-floor apartment above a vacant business. The officer was unable to access the apartment because of the fire.

The fire department arrived and extinguished the blaze, but found a man dead inside. He has since been identified as 75-year-old Ronnie G. Holeman. He lived alone in the apartment.

The fire was contained to the apartment, but the lower floor sustained smoke and water damage. The affected building is connected to two others, but those buildings weren't damaged.

The cause has not yet been determined. The investigation is being conducted by the state fire marshal's office.
