WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A 24-year-old man has been charged in the death of an 8-year-old girl who was struck in the head by a stray bullet.
The Wichita Eagle reported that Zachary S. Gaston made his first court appearance Friday in Sedgwick County District Court. He faces a string of charges, including one count of first-degree murder in the death of Kimbra Moore.
Prosecutors say a fight between a group of men and a man in a stolen car ended in gunfire early Tuesday. One of the bullets penetrated Kimbra's mobile home, striking her as she slept. Two younger siblings in the bed with her weren't injured. Police say Moore was killed instantly.
Gaston is jailed in Sedgwick County jail on $500,000 bond. He has requested a court-appointed attorney.
