TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two people were arrested in connection with a purse theft at a Topeka Walmart.

25-year-old Thomas Robert McNeil was apprehended inside a residence in the 1100 Block of SW Lincoln Friday afternoon.

Officers were called to the parking lot of the Walmart store at 1501 SW Wanamaker just before 1:30 p.m. regarding a purse snatching.

The suspects were described as two white males who jumped into a stolen blue car with a loud muffler.

An off-duty police officer observed a car and individuals who matched the descriptions of the suspects just after 1:45 p.m. near 11th and Warren. She followed them from a safe distance and directed on-duty officers to investigate.

When uniforms tried to stop the car, the suspects pulled behind a house in the 1100 Block of SW Lincoln. The driver and passenger initiated a foot chase. The driver was immediately apprehended. The second suspect, McNeil, was apprehended a short time later inside the residence.

Both suspects were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for interviews.

The 1991 Ford Probe they were in was confirmed to be a stolen car.

The purse was recovered from a trash can behind 1128 SW MacVicar.

McNeil was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrects after an interview with detectives. The second suspect was released.

The investigation is still ongoing. Police ask anyone with information to call detectives at 368-9400 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
