TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A well-known company is making sure Topeka kids have a safe place to hang out.
Lowe's Heroes has donated almost $49,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Topeka to make much-needed renovations. In addition to the money, Lowe's employees descended Friday on the organization's location near SE 27th and Adams to help paint and renovate an old weight room into a reading room at the club.
Employees say their hard work will help make a difference.
"I think it's going to make it a lot safer place for them to be, and I also think it will allow them to get out of things, not just the physical stuff, but get into the mental stuff and being able to apply it," said Barry Steffan, manager of the Topeka Lowe's store.
The reading room will be finished in about two weeks Other repairs include kitchen renovations, ceiling tile replacements and security upgrades.
