TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Local veterans are not pleased with the recent round of mailers senate candidate Laura Kelly has sent out.

A small group gathered at the corner of 8th and Harrison to voice their opinion Friday.

The mailers call former Shawnee County Sheriff and Kelly's challenger, Dick Barta, a chicken.

Veterans say the negative attacks are out of line.

"We just found that offensive," said veteran Gary Slimmer. "Especially with anyone that serves in uniform and someone who puts their life on the line serving for the country in the military and Vietnam, serves as a trooper, as a sheriff, putting your life on the line each and every day, and we just find that very offensive."

Senator Laura Kelly commented today stating "my campaign in no way questions Mr. Barta's record of service to his county, however my real concerns about the Barta campaign remain the same -- in the last 85 days Dick Barta has dodged debates, forums and the media in an effort to slide by the voters and into elected office".

Kelly and Barta will meet in a live debate at 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening on AM 580 WIBW radio.
