Local Stores Take Safety Measures Before Black Friday

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Black Friday is already 10 days away and local stores are taking necessary precautions to keep shoppers safe in the holiday crowds.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is encouraging retail employers to take precautions to prevent workplace injuries for Black Friday.

Back in 2000, shoppers ran through the doors, pushing, shoving, grabbing and climbing their way up to get holiday items on sale.

A worker was trampled to death by Black Friday shoppers in a Long Island Wal-Mart in 2008.

Now, the General Manager of Best Buy Shaun Deegan says his store is taking measures to prevent crowds from getting out of hand.

"Well, as far as crowd control goes, yeah, we have everybody lined up, we kinda have them in a double file line, if you will, two-people-wide, and bring them in an very organized manner," says Deegan.

Deegan says the store plans to have off-duty Shawnee County police officers monitoring the shopper traffic, barricades outside and an area for shoppers to camp before the big day arrives.

"And then we also supply porter potties, so that they can take care of any, needs that they have in that realm as well," says Deegan.

Topeka Target's store leader Jeff Dugas says his team has been preparing for Black Friday for months.

"We take it very seriously," says Dugas. He says there is no need for shoppers to run through the doors because some items are already accounted for.

"We hand out tickets, so the T.V.'s are accounted for from the beginning. Everyone knows we have control and know exactly what is going on, where the crowds are going," says Dugas.

Deegan and Dugas agree Black Friday will be a fun and safe day for shoppers .

"Somebody getting hurt is just not worth it," says Deegan.

Best Buy near Wanamaker Road will be open next week Thursday at 6 p.m. and Target near Wanamaker Road will open their doors Thursday at 8 p.m.
