Fire Rips Through Topeka Home, Dog Escapes Safely

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A family dog was found safe after fire ripped through a Topeka home Tuesday morning.

The Topeka Fire Department was called to the fire at 4507 SW 29th just after 10:00 a.m.

Heavy smoke and flames were visible when crews arrived, and the owner of the home was standing outside the property.

The owner reported that a family dog might still be in the house. By 11:37 a.m. the dog, named Zoe, was found safe in a front bedroom of the home.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and the cause of the blaze was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon. Fire officials said it was likely accidental.

The blaze caused $142,000 in damages, according to TFD. $95,000 of the estimate reflects structural damage to the home.

29th Street between Gage and Fairlawn was shutdown as crews worked the fire, and the City of Topeka expected the closure to last up to four hours.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire cause to be undetermined, more likely than not accidental. No foul play is suggested.

Origin of the fire was determined to be on the exterior of the structure, at or near the enclosed back porch.

Estimated dollar loss – $142,000 (One Hundred and Forty Two

Thousand Dollars); $95,000 was estimated structural damages/loss and $47,000 was estimated content damages/loss.

Five (5) Engine Companies, Two (2) Truck Companies responded to the alarm along with Two (2) Battalion Chiefs, and a Fire Investigator.

The Topeka Police Department, American Medical Response and the Capitol Area Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted with this incident.
