"Our prayers and support go to the families of these men who served our community faithfully and paid the ultimate price of service. I ask that we all remember in prayers and thoughts the risk borne by our public safety officers. Each day holds a potential risk that events may unfold with dangerous and tragic results.
I want to express my appreciation to the first responders across the City who responded with professionalism and will long be impacted by last evening’s activities."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) issued the following statement regarding the death of two members of the Topeka Police Department, Cpl. David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly, who were killed on duty yesterday, Sunday, December 16th.
“Two members of the Topeka Police Department, Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly, were killed while on duty last night. I offer my deepest condolences to the friends and family of these great public servants. I join Kansans in expressing sadness for the loss of these men and gratitude for their dedication to Kansas and commitment to protecting our communities.”
