TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)--The State of Kansas is holding its annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony Thursday and Friday.

The 18th annual Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Candlelight Vigil is May 2nd at 8:30 p.m. It's being held at the Law Enforcement Monument on the northeast quadrant of the Statehouse grounds. It is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, Topeka #3.

The 31st annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is May 3rd on the steps of the Capitol and at the Law Enforcement Monument. The ceremony will begin at noon. The public is encouraged to attend both events.

The events are in honor of National Police Week on May 12-18 and National Peace Officers' Memorial Day on may 15.

Cpl. David Gogian and Ofc. Jeff Atherly will have their names added to the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial. They were shot and killed in the line of duty in December 2012 while responding to a parking lot of a local grocery store on a report of possible drug activity.

"Two brave officers who worked every day to make their community safer will be honored, as their names are commemorated on the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial," said Colonel Ernest E. Garcia, Patrol Superintendent. "Their deaths had a profound effect on the Topeka community and on the entire state of Kansas. We honor their service and sacrifice, as well as all of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to make our state a safer place."
