Kansas Lawmakers Expected To Vote On Budget
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas legislators have returned to the Statehouse to wrap up work on the next state budget and close out their annual session.
Both chambers expected to take up-or-down votes Sunday on a proposed $14.3 billion budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
It's a little more generous than the spending plan that conservative Republican Gov. Sam Brownback proposed, but it trims overall state spending about 3 percent.
If they adjourn as planned on Sunday, lawmakers will leave Kansas with huge income tax cuts coming that Brownback and his allies believe will stimulate economic growth.
But many moderate Republicans and Democrats fear the cuts will lead to a budget disaster and force lawmakers to consider deep spending cuts next year, based on forecasts from the Legislature's staff.
