TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Governor Sam Brownback kicked off a statewide tour of areas hit hard by worsening drought conditions.
Today, he stopped in Saline County to view the Smoky Hill River.
Last week, 82 counties in Kansas were declared disaster areas allowing agricultural producers to become eligible for disaster assistance programs.
Brownback says he is impressed with the way residents are handling the crisis.
"The story that's shown here is one of cooperation," Brownback said. "You've got irrigators in the city working together. The irrigators keep irrigating, maybe not at the rate they'd like to. The city is getting the water they need, and they are working the system out."
Brownback will be in Neosho and Labette counties tomorrow before making stops in Northwestern Kansas next week.
