TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The inner workings of Kansas' highest court are coming to a computer screen near you.

Legally minded folks, and those interested in seeing the how the state's seven justices
arrive at their opinions on the law, will be able to see a live video stream of the Kansas Supreme Court in session starting Monday, August 27

"They will be able to see the court in session, which means they'll have a wide shot of the camera, which show all seven justices," Chief Justice Lawton Nuss said. "We also have the capability to zoom in on just one justice, perhaps the person that's asking the question. We also have the capabilty of zooming in on the attorney who would be answering the question or making his or her point."

Nuss said it's an effort to make the
court's work accessible to the people of Kansas.

"It's a great educational tool as well," he said, not just for students of the law, but for training purposes as well. "Several weeks ago we had a trainer in this courtroom, who was on camera. The trainer was broadcasting to 80 different locations around the state, so clerks in those locations no longer had to drive to Topeka and then drive home" for a two-hour training session, he said.

"We saved a lot of money on that one episode. We plan to keep doing that," he said.

The initiative cost $13,000, he said.

Nuss said the cameras were unobtrusive, but had reservations of their usage in lower courts.

"The distinction between us and the trial court would be that a witness or a spectator might be playing to the camera," he said. "We don't have that concern here, the seven justices know we're on camera. And the attorneys will get quickly used to it as well."

Kansas will become the 23rd state appellate court to offer a video stream of oral arguments, and one of only 13 that stream live, he said.

The stream is available when the court hears oral arguments as part of its August docket from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, August 27 through Friday, August 31.

The video stream will be available via the Judicial Branch website at under the “Supreme Court Oral Arguments” heading. Viewers may also go directly to live.kscourts.org.
