TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Kansas is the first state to receive payment from a lawsuit over unclaimed safe deposit boxes.

State Treasurer Ron Estes announced that Kansas received more than $861,000 from the U.S.Treasury.

The money comes from a lawsuit the state filed over matured savings bonds found in unclaimed safe deposit boxes.

More than 1,400 matured and unclaimed savings bonds were awarded to the state, along with a class of matured and unclaimed bonds issued to owners with a last known address in Kansas.

The treasury is currently holding $16 billion in unclaimed bonds that are no longer paying interest.

A estimated $151 million of that belongs to owners with a Kansas address.
