TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Kansas legislative leaders say they'll work this weekend to resolve tax issues and end the session.

Senate and House negotiators hoped to resume talks today. A 6.3% sales tax is set by law to drop to 5.7% in July.

Governor Brownback wants to keep the current rate to offset income tax cuts and prevent budget shortfalls. Two house Republicans today revived an idea to cut the sales tax on groceries only, it could get a vote later tonight.

Brownback says it's time for compromise. Today was the 97th day of the scheduled 90 day session.
