TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - With the drought intensifying and temperatures well above 100, the Kansas State High School Activities Association is reminding schools about heat guidelines and hydration as fall sports season approaches.

The association also has a feature on its website to help school officials calculate the heat index and determine how to address practice or games. Coaches can find out what the heat index is for their location and the risk of injury to athletes.

Assistant executive director David Cherry says Thursday more than 90,000 students participate in fall activities, including cheerleaders and musicians.

He said local schools and athletic leagues have the authority to adjust the start times of activities if conditions aren't appropriate to protect athletes and fans.
