TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Attorney General Derek Schmidt is working to combat criminal street gangs.

He will propose a new anti-racketeering statute to the Kansas legislature. He says it will help bring gang leaders to justice.

The proposal is part of his state-wide "Gang Free Kansas" initiative.

As part of the effort, law enforcement officers recommended changes to state law, making it easier for them to prosecute gang members who commit crimes.

The statute is aimed at prosecuting criminals for engaging in a pattern of criminal activity, rather than prosecuting each individual act.
