Governor Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) has ordered flags be flown at half-staff from sun-up until Noon on Monday in honor of Memorial Day. "Thank you to all the soldiers past and present who have fought for our freedom," said Gov. Brownback. "I urge Kansans to take time this Memorial Day weekend and reflect upon the glorious freedoms our troops have bestowed upon us."

Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins also is also remembering soldiers on Memorial Day. "American will gather to remember our brave men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives for freedom. This Memorial Day, I invite each of you to take a moment to thank the men and women who sacrifice each day to serve and protect the United States, remember the families whose loved ones did not return from battle, and honor those we have lost. Memorial Day first originated after the American Civil War, and holds a special place in our country's history. May God bless our troops and their families."

American Legion Post 400 moved its service from Rochester Cemetery indoors to its hall but mother nature threw a wrench in that, too.

State Representative Melanie Meier of Leavenworth read by flashlight when the power went out just after the service began. A gun salute and taps rounded out Post 400's service.

A Memorial Day Mass was suppose to be held outside at Mt. Calvary Cemetery but had to be moved inside to Saint Joseph Catholic Church because of the rain. Reverend Tim Haberkorn delivered the blessing.

Veterans of Foreign Wars were also marking Memorial Day with a ceremony.

Lt. Col. Erich Campbell, Senior Army Advisor for the Kansas National Guard, gave a speech at Philip Billard VFW Post #1650 on the sacrifices the American people make. They also took time to remember members who have died in the past year.
