TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Top Republicans in the Kansas House say they're working on a new tax plan following their chamber's rejection of a proposal to cut the state sales tax on groceries.

House Taxation Committee Chairman Richard Carlson acknowledged Friday that fellow GOP House members didn't have a new plan yet.

House and Senate negotiators resumed their talks after Thursday night's rejection of a proposal to reduce the sales tax on groceries to 4.9 percent in October. The measure would have kept the tax at 6.3 percent on other items.

The tax is set by law to fall to 5.7 percent in July, but Republican Gov. Sam Brownback wants to raise additional revenues to prevent budget shortfalls following aggressive income tax cuts last year and to allow for further income tax cuts.
