Veterans Day Events Around Northeast Kansas

The following is from the KS Adjutant General's Office:

In observance of Veterans Day, the Kansas National Guard will be supporting numerous celebrations across the state.

Events scheduled for Nov. 11
Alma - Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to veterans who are residents. The schedule for those visits are:
11:00 a.m. Alma Manor, 234 Manor Circle

Chanute - Soldiers from the Forward Support Company, 891st Engineer Battalion, Iola, will be participating in a Veterans Day parade. The unit will be providing a Color Guard and a military vehicle for the parade. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m.

Clifton –Sgt. 1st Class Marc Beswick, Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Abilene, and Sgt. 1st Class Jamie Jackson, Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Marysville, are participating in Clifton's Veterans Day Parade/Ceremonies hosted by the American Legion. The parade starts at 2 p.m.

Cottonwood Falls – Col. Alan Soldan, chief of staff for Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Chase County All Veterans Memorial, 424 N Walnut St., northeast corner of Swope Park. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Emporia - Soldiers from Company D, 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, Emporia, will be participating in a Veterans Day parade. The unit will be providing military vehicles, including an M1A1 tank and HMMWVs, for the parade. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m.

Eskridge – Master Sgt. Kevin L. Nutter, 190th Air Refueling Wing, will be participating in a Veterans Day parade in downtown Eskridge. The parade starts at 10 a.m.

Hays – Master Sgt. Les Wing, Kingman, 287th Sustainment Brigade and Sgt. 1st Class Jerrod Hays, Wellington, Detachment 1, Battery B, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery will be the guest speakers at a Veterans Day ceremony at VFW Post 9076, 22nd and Vine Streets. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m.

Holton – Maj. Gen. (KS) Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day Dinner at VFW Post 1367, Jackson County Fair Building, 5th and Dakota Ave. Members of Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery will also be participating in the dinner, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

Kingman – Lt. Col. Dana Duggins, administrative officer for the 287th Sustainment Brigade, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at Kingman High School, 260 W. Kansas Ave. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m.

Larned – Soldiers from the 731st Transportation Company and Battery E (Target Acquisition), 161st Field Artillery, Larned, will participate in a Veterans Day parade. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m.

Lawrence – Brig. Gen. Victor Braden, assistant division commander, 35th Infantry Division, Fort Leavenworth, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at Budig Hall, University of Kansas. The event is being hosted by the University of Kansas Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC units. A retreat ceremony, with the lowering of the flag, will be at 4:15 p.m. on the front lawn of Strong Hall. A 24-hour vigil will begin at 7 p.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War memorial and the Campanile to honor those who have given their lives in defense of the United States. All memorials are on Memorial Drive on the KU campus.

Leavenworth – Soldiers from the 1077th Medical Company Ground Ambulance, Olathe, will participate in a Veterans Day parade. The unit will be providing military vehicles for the parade. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m.

Manhattan – Master Sgt. Mark Zafran, 778th Transportation Company, Topeka, and his father, retired Master Sgt. Sam Zafran, will be participating in the Veterans Day parade. They will be driving a M35A2. Sam Zafran served in the Constabulary Force at the end of World War II and also served in Vietnam. Sgt. Dewey Sweet, Detachment 1, Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Manhattan, is also participating in the parade. The parade starts at 9:30 and goes down Poyntz Avenue.

Maple Hill – Chief Warrant Officer 2 Scott Sackrider, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, Topeka, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day ceremony at the VFW. The ceremony starts at 7:15 p.m.

Marysville – Staff Sgt. Michael Maschmeier, Marysville, Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery and Staff Sgt. Jeff Metz, Washington, Detachment 1, Recruiting and Retention Battalion, will be providing a Color Guard for a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Marysville High School, 1111 Walnut. The ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m.

McLouth – Maj. Charles Harriman, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, Topeka, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day program at the McLouth Elementary School, 217 Summit. The program starts at 2:30 p.m.

Overland Park – Capt. Kendrea Shingleton, Olathe, 137th Transportation Company, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at East Antioch Elementary School, 7342 Lowell. The program begins at 2 p.m.

Paola – Capt. Shawn Miller, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Paola American Legion Post 156, 2 Wallace Park. The event begins at 11 a.m.

Salina - Brig. Gen. Eric Peck, the commander of the Kansas Army National Guard, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day Recognition being held at VFW Post 1432, 1108 W Crawford St. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

St. Marys - Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to veterans who are residents. The schedule for those visits are:
12:00 p.m. Saint Marys Manor, 206 S Grand Ave.

Tonganoxie – Staff Sgt. Max Joye, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 169th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Olathe, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at the Tonganoxie High School auditorium, 404 East Highway 24-40. The program begins at 2 p.m.

Topeka – Maj. Gen. (KS) Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Washburn University Vietnam Memorial located south of Morgan Hall. The ceremony begins at 11:40 a.m.

Topeka – Brig. Gen. Keith Lang, Leawood, chief of staff for Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Air Component, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at Pauline South Intermediate School, 7034 SW Morrill Rd. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. During the ceremony, a plaque will be rededicated in honor of former 190th Air Refueling Wing commander Col. Michael O’Toole. O’Toole was killed in a private plane crash on Aug. 8, 2003. O’Toole’s family members will be attendance for the ceremony.

Topeka – Retired Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose, Overbrook, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day luncheon being held at American Legion Post 400, 3029 NW Highway 24. The luncheon begins at 11 a.m. and is free to all military veterans.

Topeka – Chaplain (Col.) Donald Davidson, Kansas National Guard state chaplain, will be participating in a Veterans Day ceremony at the Gage Park Veterans Memorial, 10th and Gage Blvd. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. A monument honoring all combat infantry veterans will be dedicated during the ceremony

Topeka – Col. Mike Erwin, director of personnel, Joint Forces Headquarters, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at American Legion Capitol Post #1, 3800 SE Michigan. The program begins at 11 a.m.

Topeka – Lt. Col. Rick Peat will be the guest speaker at a Topeka South Rotary Veterans Day breakfast. The breakfast starts at 8 a.m. at the Washburn University Student Union.

Topeka – Retired Lt. Col. Doug Jacobs, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at Shawnee Heights Elementary School, 2410 SE Burton St. The program starts at 3:15 p.m.

Topeka – Maj. Jeff Howell, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 635th Support Group, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at Topeka West High School Gymnasium, 2001 SW Fairlawn Road. The program starts at 3:15 p.m.

Topeka - Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to veterans who are residents. The schedule for those visits are:

Topeka - VetAide.org is hosting a concert to raise money for Alford-Clark VFW Post 852. The 2nd annual America's Heart Vetaide Hearts Across America will begin at 8 p.m. at 39th Street Bar, 555 SW 39th St., Topeka. Bands include The Waterdog Nation, Eleven After, The Artificial Red, and Meltdown.

Valley Falls – The Kansas National Guard will be providing a Color Guard for the Valley Falls School Veterans Day Celebration, 700 Oak Street. The event starts at 2 p.m.

Wamego - Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to veterans who are residents. The schedule for those visits are:
10:45 a.m. Wamego Valley Vista, 2011 Grandview

Winchester – Maj. Matt Twombly will be the guest speaker at the Jefferson County North High School, 302 5th Street. The ceremony starts at 2:30 p.m. There will be a dinner starting at 6 p.m. and it is free for all veterans.

Events scheduled for Nov. 12
Garden City – Lt. Col. Chris Burr, commander of the 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Hiawatha, will participate in a Veterans Day parade being sponsored by the American Legion. The parade begins at 2 p.m.

Iola – Lt. Col. Shawn Manley, commander of the 891st Engineer Battalion, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day program being held at the Iola Town Square. The program starts at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a parade. Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the Forward Support Company, 891st Engineer Battalion, Iola, will be participating in the parade. Members of the units will be carrying a giant United States flag in the parade.

Topeka - Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to veterans who are residents. The schedule for those visits are:
4:00 p.m. Claire Bridge, 5800 SW Drury Lane

Wichita – Brig. Gen. Eric Peck, the commander of the Kansas Army National Guard, will be the guest speaker for a World War II Memorial dedication at Wichita Veterans Memorial Park, near downtown Wichita. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Soldiers from the 287th Sustainment Brigade will be providing a Color Guard for the event.
