TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- A special traffic enforcement program goes into effect Thursday, August 15 to crack down on people driving under the influence.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is joining with other law enforcement agencies in extra efforts to bust DUIs.

The "You drink. You drive. You lose." Special Traffic Enforcement Program campaign runs from August 15 though Labor Day weekend until September 2. During the campaign, all traffic laws are enforced, but with specific focus on impaired driving laws.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, you are 4.5 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a crash in which alcohol is a factor, compared to if alcohol isn't a factor.

KHP troopers worked four fatal crashes in Kansas' highways during the 2012 Labor Day holiday, and one of them was alcohol-related. KHP worked four total impaired driving crashes and arrested 39 people for impaired driving. The program ran from 6 p.m. the Friday prior to the holiday through midnight the Monday of the holiday.

For assistance or to report a suspected impaired driver, dial *47 for KHP or *582 if on a Turnpike.
