Kansas Sees Hundreds of Accidents Due To Storm

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Throughout northeast Kansas, crews are still working to clear streets and roadways. The winter snow storm last night caused numerous accidents around the state.

"During a 24-hour period from yesterday, Wednesday, noon to today, Thursday at noon, we've had 355 non-injury accidents, 46 injury accidents and one fatality," Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Winters, said. "We've also had 548 motorist-assists."

Winters said the type of accidents are typical of snow-related weather.

"We do have a lot of vehicles that hit guard rails, sliding into the medians, getting minor damage to their vehicles," he said.

The Topeka Police Department has seen 35-40 accidents Thursday, including 18 non-injury and three injury reports.

Officers are still in Phase III accident reporting as of 4 p.m. Thursday, due to the high volume of calls, meaning officers will only investigate those calls involving injury, hit and run and accidents with disabling vehicle damage.

Workers with the City of Topeka have now transitioned to treating residential roads, working problematic areas and local streets.

The city is anticipating a refreeze and are keeping workers on duty overnight to keep travel safe.

The Kansas Department of Transportation also has workers on standby should roadways need resalting.

KDOT stresses that drivers need to be very careful when on the road tonight because wet surfaces will likely refreeze and be dangerous in the morning.

Travelers can hear road condition and weather information by calling KDOT's 511 number from anywhere in Kansas or 1-866-511-KDOT (5368) from anywhere in the U.S. Users should select “highways” and the route for which they want information.
